The Box:
Serious NYC performance spaces don’t need gimmicky names, it’s all about the work, man. It especially doesn’t matter if you’re a Hammerstein. Simon Hammerstein has opened The Box (OK, maybe it can be a gimmick if your mind is in the heyday of 42nd St.), a two-story venue with two bars and some classic New York history. Remnants of The Box’s past, however, appear to be long gone. The fabulous trash and vaudeville, however, isn’t. The wood and velvet space plays host to everything from comedy to burlesque, as well as regulars like Jude Law and Rachel Weisz. U-shaped banquettes serve as the perfect locale to sip on cocktails and hide your phone while you text all your friends telling them Jude just looked at you. This all only happens, however, if you can actually get in. Seems that the gimmick here is the velvet rope.
I went to The Box for a private party, so no door problem. The space looks nice and I like those small booths upstairs. The curtains will completely shield you from wandering eyes. hem...use your imagination. And of course it will require $$$ for your privacy. The show normally starts around 1pm and the place comes to life late at night.
