The Brooklyn Star: One of the wonderful things about New York's growing foodie obsession is that while many upscale chefs do care about using the richest, most creative ingredients, they don’t much care what said ingredients will do to your heart (or ass). Trusting Brooklyn adults to make their own lifestyle decisions, newly-reopened Brooklyn Star had the gall to go right ahead and put Dr. Pepper (that's right, Bloomberg—soda!) on the menu not once but twice. First in a cocktail (gin, Dr. Pepper syrup, grapefruit and soda, $8) and then as a meat marinade (Half rack of Dr. Pepper ribs, $18), making it possible that the obsession that once had teachers testing you for ADD can now be a part of your entire meal. But then you'd be missing some of the other bad-for-you-but-good-for-the-stretch-pants-industry dishes like Fried Pig Tails (with Jalapeno-Onion Hush Puppies, $11) and Bacon-wrapped Trout ($21). Wash all those delectable fat grams down with one (or two) of over a dozen drafts, a full menu of cocktails, or a taste of the ole standby—Bourbon. Say hello to the best new BBQ in an already-saturated hood, and goodbye to your top button.
