The Caulfield:
From the owners of The Volstead and Vig 27 comes The Caulfield, named for the sullen, searching protagonist from high-school English staple, The Catcher in the Rye. The bar’s décor proves as classic as the novel, showing off sleek wooden tables and art-deco lighting. Cuddle up with your insecurities and observe the scene from a cozy booth or go bold and attempt some social competency at their communal table. It will be hard to maintain a semblance of the namesake’s isolation, what with live local music and shareable Northern Mexican fare like classic enchiladas ($13), crab stuffed portabello ($12) and, dare we say, the best nachos ever ($12-$15). Ten signature cocktails (named in cryptically novel-related terms, ex. Pheobe’s Heart and The Tambourine Man) complement the grub with a variety of simple and refreshing quaffs. Like any new spot, the Caulfield’s got some service-based kinks to iron out, but we have faith this low-key bar will be catching after-work imbibers before they hit the subway in no time.
