The Emerson: While Clinton Hill’s Myrtle Ave. may be packed with bars, word on the street was that the hood was seriously lacking in some good ol’ Transcendentalism. Truth-seekers can breathe a sigh of relief with the opening of The Emerson, a new night spot that the owners envision becoming a space for writers and art students from nearby Pratt to “discuss ideas.” The real truth is that thus far, the disobedience at this bar has been anything but civil. But with drinks like the "Emerson" (Breuckelener gin, ginger, mint, lime sour, prosecco, $9) and a boozy ice cream shake ($12), who could expect civility? The crowd is young and hungry for action—communal booths, a pool table and a late night DJ just encourage misbehavior. When the crowd gets a hunger of a different kind, Neiman Ranch hot dogs and four varieties of cheese sandwiches can be ordered along with the next pint (there are a dozen brews on tap, mostly local). The bar's stylish art deco touches and art print “gallery” keep the atmosphere classy, if not exactly, ahem, transcendent. |
