The Emerson
While Clinton Hill’s Myrtle Ave. may be packed with bars, word on the street was that the hood was seriously lacking in some good ol’ Transcendentalism. Truth-seekers can breathe a sigh of relief with the opening of The Emerson, a new night spot that the owners envision becoming a space for writers and art students from nearby Pratt to “discuss ideas.” The real truth is that thus far, the disobedience at this bar has been anything but civil. But with drinks like the "Emerson" (Breuckelener gin, ginger, mint, lime sour, prosecco, $9) and a boozy ice cream shake ($12), who could expect civility? The crowd is young and hungry for action—communal booths, a pool table and a late night DJ just encourage misbehavior. When the crowd gets a hunger of a different kind, Neiman Ranch hot dogs and four varieties of cheese sandwiches can be ordered along with the next pint (there are a dozen brews on tap, mostly local). The bar's stylish art deco touches and art print “gallery” keep the atmosphere classy, if not exactly, ahem, transcendent.

Dr. Jay

Hands down the coolest spot on Myrtle.
Great DJs, pool, comfortable booths and a real mixed crowd.
Been in there a couple of times. Haven't been let down yet.

I have been wanting to try this place. It looks cool! Good to know they have food.

So-so

Overall, I liked the Emerson. The staff was friendly and the space is big enough where you don't have to be jammed up next to people (well, unless you want to be).

The Emerson seems to try too hard for my taste. I liked the decor, but the food (well, I only had one of the cheese sandwiches) was not good; how can you screw up a grilled cheese?

But, if you are only going for the drinks, then it's a great stop. The Emerson is just one of the many spots along Myrtle that you should check out.

So true!

I checked out the Emerson based on this recommendation and was surprised how hoppin' it was for a brand new bar. I loved that they have a $3 Light Beer in a can for those watching their caloric intake and also their wallet! One day when I don't care about either, I will go back for that boozey shake...
