The Girl from Ipanema:
Descending the stairs to this narrow, subterranean bar, you’ll see tinted mirrors lining the ceiling and walls, and blue fluorescent lighting that has the feeling of a strip club. The predominantly male clientele and scantily clad barmaids do nothing to dispel this image. Middle-aged men hunched over at the long bar look to have just crept down for a drink after a fight with the missus, and the few late 20-something men shooting pool in the back are not the types you’d bring home to mother. Transplanted to the LES, this environment just might become second home to a slew of hipsters looking to dodge the mainstream; in the current location, it feels like an early ’80s dive bar where the men who sat in on opening night are still lingering over drinks.
