The Globe:
The gaudy red neon sign is at least partly appropriate: The Globe is a reincarnation of one of New York’s oldest bar spaces—not to mention oldest brothels—in the 1840s. But don't be mislead by the lurid promise of its previous history, nor the vague multicultural promise suggested by its name. Instead, The Globe is an authentically-Irish Irish Pub, and—considering its busy 23rd and Lex location—it’s an unexpectedly welcoming and warm one. There are two main areas: The busier bar up front is fine, but we gravitated toward the dimly-lit back space, where big leather chairs surround an electric fireplace and people play backgammon in handsome booths. The newly-opened kitchen serves up pretty inner-national food (turkey chili, wings, burgers, etc.). But more eclectic is the clientele, a mix of students from nearby Baruch College, business-suited professionals and older ladies and gentlemen who all still frequent the place—despite the modern-day lack of ladies of the night.
I miss the Grand Saloon and I was sadder than most to see it go. But since it's downfall was inevitable, I'm glad that the new owners at least kept up the same level of class and committment the GS once had. The Globe is a good spot, with lots of room and resonably priced drinks. The bartenders are friendly and heavy handed, which is good for anyone out there looking to get liquored up after a hard work day.
