The Highliner: The historic Empire Diner may have undergone a renovation, but the new version, The Highliner, has the same old feel. Assuming you liked the retro diner in the first place, this is a good thing. It’s an even better thing if you’re a fan of Coffee Shop in Union Square, since the owners are the same, and the staff isn’t too hard on the eyes here either. There is no specialty cocktail list in place yet, but the amped-up food menu with the likes of meatballs in cheesy grits ($16) and poached eggs with salsify, goat cheese, mushrooms and asparagus ($14) should go down just as well with a classic martini or glass of wine. Until the private dining room opens, grab a seat in the main section, a stool at the double-sided communal table, or a chair at one of the many tables outside. The Highliner is open until 5am, so the people-watching after last call should be worth any indigestion resulting from your late-night gastronomical indulgence.
