The Horse Box:
What is known as a “horse box” in the British Islands roughly translates to “horse trailer” in American English, and this new East Village dive is similar in size and appearance to its namesake. They’ve packed away enough cheap booze to drown a horse, and we’re pretty sure the place will begin to smell like one after the first Yankee’s game displayed on the multitude of television sets. Horse Box follows the common mantra of “less is more,” but fortunately that doesn’t extend to the service. The staff is very entertaining and helpful, perhaps out of necessity as the blank walls and dull facade aren’t going to be drawing in a large crowd anytime soon. If however, they do succumb to stereotypical East Village bartender snobbery (à la Mona’s), we’re fine with it so long as they keep pouring drinks at half-off from 12pm–8pm every day and serving $1.00 drinks for ladies on Wednesdays. It’s enough of a reason to show up, but will Horse Box leave a lasting impression? We say “neigh.”
I go to the horse box consistently. With all the high-end & overpriced bars in NYC where you feel like you have to know someone or wear the appropriate thing to get in, it's so nice to have a "neighborhood bar" where you feel at home when you show up. The bartenders know you by name after going only once and the laid back feel makes you happy to know that there are indeed places you can go in this city that don't make you think about how much money you're going to save when you move out of the city one day
