The Irish American:
From The White House (Obama has traced his roots back to County Offaly) to thousands of New Yorkers (everyone from Ray Kelly to Bobby Flay), Irish Americans are everywhere. But no version is more welcome than an Irish bar—especially in the Financial District—an area in dire need of a nightlife makeover. The Irish American offers the younger FiDi crowd a cozy and relaxed after-work pub and restaurant off the beaten path of Stone St. Crawl down the stairs into the spacious bar to be greeted with an enthusiastic “Slainte!” from the attentive staff. The Irish influence is immediately apparent from the draughts on offer (Smithwick’s, Guinness, Harp), and the pub grub is a mix of—you guessed it—Irish-American bites. The two-page menu includes everything from Bourbon-Infused Nachos (served with blue cheese, $13) and a Philly Cheese Steak Wrap ($11) to typical Irish bites like Shepherd’s Pie ($13). If you can’t decide between Irish or American nibbles, the “Irish American” Sliders (cheeseburger sliders with Irish bacon, $10) are a delicious marriage of the two cuisines. As all post-work places should, this space features sports-bar accoutrements—several pool tables, dart boards, a jukebox loaded with classic rock and TVs featuring your favorite sports games. There isn't much decoration otherwise, but the aim here is clearly to swap office gossip and loosen up to the tune of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
