The JakeWalk: A type of paralysis caused by toxic bootleg alcohol, or a new date spot for the West Elm set? Both! From the owners of Smith & Vine and Stinky Bklyn, this Carroll Gardens wine, whiskey and cheese bar is the latest to jump on the Prohibition-themed bandwagon. While not a detail is spared, down to the male employees’ uniform of striped shirts with ties tucked in, the JakeWalk manages to avoid pretentiousness, save for the CrackBerry clientele. Beyond the 50 wines by the glass and 120-plus whiskeys, a cocktail menu nods to a time when the living was anything but easy. Try the Cotton: absinthe, dry and sweet vermouth, rye whiskey, and orange bitters. The staff is knowledgeable and quick to suggest a pairing for cured meats, caviar, and cheeses, including a fondue of the day. Just be careful not to ask for a stiff drink. |
