The John Dory: John Dory “the first,” April Bloomfield’s Meatpacking District oyster bar project, was forced to shutter in 2009 because of its lonely far-Westside locale. But in December of 2010, John Dory was given a new lease on life, and on 29th and Broadway. Its new bustling location has, in contrast, been almost annoyingly packed, with tourists and young professionals alike perched ‘round the high, copper-topped tables. The menu is fairly standard, with mussels, oysters and chorizo-stuffed squid prepared at the open kitchen. The ambiance, meanwhile, takes the typical seafood-stuffiness down a notch by throwing just-this-side-of-kitschy plastic crustaceans and seashell lamps onto its glass-tiled walls. Two giant fish tanks adorn each end of the bar, just below an industrialized ceiling reminiscent of a ship’s underbelly. Your best bet is to swim up to the bar, where you needn’t rely on the overrun staff to obtain a Sasha Petraske-created cocktail (try the Veronicocktail—prosecco, house-made pomegranate molasses and ginger, $12). Just be prepared to wait for that seat—these oysters have found their pearls smack in the middle of the city. |
