The Lambs Club:
While the opinions differ on exactly how many years behind schedule the Lambs Club finally opened, there is no disputing that the restaurant and lounge located within the Chatwal New York delivers the style and glamour that was so long anticipated. Constructed next door to the "theatrical social club" of the same name, you'd have to believe they'd raise a scotch in approval for such a dramatic re-imagining. The no-holds-bar art deco tour de force extends from the brilliant red banquettes, Nouveau murals of Old New York and copper light fixtures, to the era-appropriate uniforms on the bellhops and busboys. Geoffrey Zakarian’s 90-seat restaurant is complimented by a tiny dining car-esque lobby bar, but the upstairs lounge is where things could get interesting. The red glow of the lounge and (full disclosure) the high-society prices lend a touch of exclusivity, while light fixtures in the likeness of New York's art deco pride-and-joy Empire State Building twirl above the bar. Small plates like beef tartare ($21) are offered for nibbling alongside a full repertoire of scotch, wine, and simple but pleasant cocktails ($15-18) by Sasha Petraske. Unlike the original Lambs Club, women are not only allowed in here, they are encouraged to indulge their vices—and you have to give them chops for that.
