The Living Room (@ W Hotel – Times Square):
The recently renovated Living Room hasn’t changed much, but there’s definitely some added color to the sterile white environment. Within the urbane den of sophistication, the far nooks have burgundy tones while white plank banquettes line the wall opposite the bar, separated by light-toned leather chairs. Color projections shadow the entryway columns, creating a bright light show that adds to the modern feel. Even with splashes of color, the white-on-white color scheme is more sterile-hospital than sophisticated chic. On the bright side, the model-like staffers aren’t just pretty faces; they’re friendly and mix a mean cosmo too. Despite being on the seventh floor of the W Hotel, a Midtown crowd crams the banquettes while tourists are few and far between amidst a sea of suits. We’re not sure if that’s a good thing or not.
A few girlfriends and I decided to try this place out on a Friday nite for martinis. When we came up the elevator, we stood for a minute and debated whether we should stay...crowd looked interesting, and atmosphere was different than the norm - white couches set up in different areas like a bunch of living rooms (hence the name) in one huge room (think Ikea but trying to look more expensive). A quick round of Rocks/Paper/Scissors determined we stay and have at least one drink. We ordered martinis (expensive but expected in a bar/lounge like that in NYC) at the bar and sat on a couch/ottoman. Someone proceeded to tell us we can only sit there if we used waitress service so we stayed sitting. Don't worry about that, even when we were ready for more drinks a waitress didn't stop by and ask us if we needed any for at least a half hour. Nothing real special about it, people watching is fun...you have the suits trying to look really important, the girls hanging out (like us), some couples, guys acting like they have more money than they probably do (haha). So it's half show-offs, half normal people. As far as dress, my friends and I were in nice jeans and tops with boots (this was March) and there were dresses, jeans, suits present so you don't have to go too crazy dressing to the nines if you don't want to. All in all, we had a good time.

Ordering a martini from the Living Room in the W hotel in Times Square was short of the real thing. It was a half full martini and the comment the bartender gave was that there martini glasses were too big to be filled all the way and "that's how we do it here!" I laughed without leave a tip on the $60 bill for 4 martinis that were PATHETIC! I know drinks are expensive in NYC, but at least give me what I pay for!
