The Meatball Factory:
Taking inspiration from The Meatball Shop, Destino veterans continue their quest to bring homestyle Italian to the States with their newest venture, the Meatball Factory. The Gramercy/East Village spot sports a larger interior, more industrial décor and more expansive menu options than its forerunner—there’s a lot more to their game than just meatballs. Try the black truffle mac and cheese ($11) or hand-cut fries with melted mozzarella curds ($7) paired with one of their numerous craft beers ($4-$12) or wines by the glass ($9-$11). Even their more traditional options offer variety—with eight balls and eight mix-and-match sauces—so no matter how often you visit, it will be tough to nom the same thing twice. While the service is having a bit of a rocky take-off (with said mix-and-match menu surely a culprit in confusion), the food itself is so good that you’ll probably be happy even if the dish you receive is completely different from what you ordered (which, to be frank, is a real possibility). So take a seat in the modern interior, tune out the steady flow of ambulances streaking down 2nd Ave and chow down on some serious Italian.
