The Odeon: Thirty years ago (pre-designated stroller parking, pre-JFK Jr. sightings, and yes, even pre-DeNiro days), The Odeon’s neon lights first lit up Tribeca’s dark cobble-stone streets. Although Keith McNally’s original brasserie attracted the likes of Andy Warhol, John Belushi and Madonna, the stately yet casual haunt now attracts more Wall Street execs than creative artists. Fortunately, little else has changed—from the tried-and-true faux bistro setting (grand ceilings, worn-in red booths and mirror-adorned walls), to the bow-tied bartenders that serve you, the spot invokes a rare feeling of both nostalgia and familiarity. Neighborhood locals, reminiscent tourists and thirty-something Paul Smith-wearing professionals (accompanied by their Tory Burch-wearing girlfriends) mingle happily at the long bar, enjoying the boisterous space. Thankfully, cocktails aren’t overly-complicated (no chai-infused vermouth or hibiscus infused ice cubes found here), but are expertly crafted, like the Tabini Martini made with stoli ohranj, fresh mint and lime juice ($12). Although The Odeon may not be as decadent as the guests it served decades before, remember that all good things must come to an end…even Madonna moved to the UES. |
