The Orchard House:
Located in the former APL space on one of the Lower East Side's more tranquil streets, The Orchard House (more lovingly—and forcibly—known as “The Orch”) is a luxurious and colorfully decorated retreat from the grit of the LES where the nabe’s friendly vibe remains intact. There’s a wide variety of cocktails, beer and wine to suit any visitor’s palate; East Side sweeties in the mood for something saccharine should go for the playfully-named Orchard Fizz (apple vodka, sparkling wine, cranberry, citrus, lemon and bitters, $12). Sit at a table to partake in the regular menu, which presents predominantly creative American dishes—try the endive & watercress salad with banana, Amish cheddar and cardamom-chive dressing ($9). With a private room in back and flexible table arrangement in the main room, Orchard House is great for everything from a big b-day din to an intimate date night, so long as everyone’s prepared for the after-hours decibel explosion—a rotation of local DJs cranks the scene-o-meter up to 11 after 10pm.
