The Purple Fig:
On a far westside street you didn’t even know was zoned for restaurants stands a quaint lil’ French bistro. The Purple Fig is a neighborhood spot that seems to be from a completely different world than its setting suggests, what with its take on slow and simple cuisine, an El Bulli-trained chef in Sam Bryne and a decidedly small-town feel. A friendly staff only adds to the charm. The restaurant make most of its own ingredients, including breads and pastries, handles the butchering and curing of its meats and fishes, and does whatever exactly one does to make pates. This leads to ambitious dishes on a small and selective menu such as roasted scallops with foie gras ($36.95) and roasted rare Moscovy duck breast with poached figs ($26.95). The bar snacks menu is no less impressive, nor is a five-course tasting menu ($42). For tippling options, there’s cocktails galore, highlighted by the whiskey-based "The Smoked Peach" ($13) and a large wine list available by the glass, carafe or bottle. The Purple Fig proves if you walk far enough west, you can almost get transported off Manhattan (or fall into the Hudson)!
