The Seahorse Tavern: Seafood spots are as plentiful on the UES, but only as Italian restaurants full of old people, strollers that cost more than a first car, and Second Avenue subway line construction noise. But in a pricey hood where now even a food truck sells $16 lobster rolls, it’s nice to find an affordable, casual seafood joint. The Seahorse bills themselves as “comfort seafood” for locals, and with locally-sourced fried oysters ($12), Atlantic salmon ($22) and cheaper bites on the tavern-only menu such as oysters ($2.75 each), peel & eat shrimp ($10), and the crab club sandwich ($14), that is surely the case. Decor is local too, with paneling built from Coney Island boardwalk planks surrounded by antiques and artwork from the nabe. There’s a full bar of booze, wine, and beer (reasonably priced, nothing special), but the tippling highlights are cocktails, specifically the “secret house recipe” Spicy Seahorse Bloody Mary (all cocktails $12). No strollers, no old folks, cheap seafood—how can you beat that?
