The Sixth Ward: Named after the Five Points neighborhood where Irish gangs used to run the streets, The Sixth Ward is an Irish pub in lower Manhattan where nowadays, everyone from hipsters to frat boys think they rule supreme. With plenty of drinking areas inside (seats by the front window, along the bar, in individual booths, by pillars equipped with ledges, in the back room by the pool table, and on the outdoor patio when the weather permits) there’s enough space for everyone without the need for a turf war. Revelers chatter over varied tunes while sipping $11 cocktails like the “Tangle Twister” (pomegranate liqueur, Absolute Pear and pineapple juice) and “Red Bull Bettystown” (Red Bull, Malibu, peach schnapps, lemon, orange and grenadine), or they munch standard Irish and American pub fare—the kitchen stays open until 11:30pm most nights, and brunch is served on weekends. Times may have changed since the days of the Dead Rabbits and Bowery Boys, but an Irish pub in New York never goes out of style.
