The Sky Room
With the baggage charges, hair gel bans and flight attendant freak-outs, who even wants to bother with air travel these days? Do yourself a favor and skip the flight, and make your destination the 34th floor of the Fairfield Inn, also known as Sky Room—the highest rooftop bar in NYC. Not quite in the clouds, you can enjoy 360 degree views while your cocktails are delivered by servers in flight attendant frocks those Delta girls would go green for. You’ll feel as though you’ve at least traveled to the Cape when you lounge on all-white deck chairs surrounded by lush greenery. Forgo an $8 beer for a $15 specialty cocktail like the Dragon Flight (Bacardi Dragon Berry with muddled strawberries, mint and lime, topped with club soda), and take in the overhead view from your cabana or under the retractable roof. Just don’t plan on burning off those calories on deck—despite the booty-shaking Cuban beats, Sky Room is most assuredly a swank lounge, not a dance club. While your tab may rival the price of a cross-country ticket, with five distinct places to party in, this is one destination you won’t mind being delayed at.

They Are Racist... Stay Away

On 4/2/2011, I showed up for the Sky Room at 11:30 with a friend and his sister. We actually cut to the very front because another sister was right there (Sorry Folks). Now... from what I've been told the Sky Room opens at 10pm. The sister that was their earlier has been there since 11pm. By 12:30am we were informed that the guy whose birthday party we were attending was OVER-CAPACITADED and that the club itself was over capacity at the moment and that the only way you'll get in will be if you buy their bottle service.

Ok... Now check this...

1). At what point was this guys party over-capacitated between 10 - 11:30?

2). I was informed that the place had 3 floors inside. I kind of find it a tad bit unbelievable that a club would have filled up between 10pm - 11:30pm. Nope I refuse to believe that.

3). If a place was over capacity, why would you then offer people the opportunity to go in if they purchase your bottle service? Would that not be a fire hazard?

4). The birthday buy had a 70 person guest list Max. But he claimed he only had 30 - 40 people which I could believe since the remaining 40 - 30 guest were outside.

5). I notice that Sky Room was indeed letting people in, but they were either white or light skin.

I don't know who run this business but this was B.S. They are racist and I would never make an attempt to go back there. Unless you're white, light skin or willing to do their bottle service you should stay away as well.

Split Decision

The service and staff had been great the first two times I visited, but on Halloween I had an issue. Unfortunately, I may never be going back to the Sky Room. I had worked on this story the night before and went back for photos on Saturday. I got there early for parking and to get some staff shots and was still waiting around for patrons to file-in to get some group shots (Saturday night started slower), when a white security person going by the name of "Terry" asked me why I was there two nights in a row. I am sure it was my puzzled look that led him to mention security people had seen me walking around, taking photos and talking to people. I replied that I spoke to the director and some staff the night before that I would be glad to do a story and come back for photos, get a quote or two, etc. "Halloween over New York." He thought for a while, after which said I was "upsetting the flow". Then, he asked me to leave. Perhaps, he was acting on his own, perhaps, instructed by someone else. I do not drink more than one beer a week (usually one a month, occasionally add one to pancake batter), don't smoke, don't get loud, don't curse (well maybe in traffic), and I am ALWAYS, ALWAYS polite. So after being given an escort to the elevator and out of the building, I can confidently report that after this new life experience, for me, there are other restaurants, bars and lounges in New York City.
PS: I've heard worse stories.
