The Smith: The latest outpost of everyone’s fave East Village boozy brunch spot gets a few things right: the same delicious sundaes, that black-and-white photo booth and….that’s about it. Gone are the friendly bartenders, prompt service and fun ambience. Instead of quirky art, eclectic tiles and mood lighting, you’ll find a bar scene that’s lined with more strollers than martini glasses. Expect too-strong drinks and watered-down food that’ll leave you feeling more like an Angry Apple (vodka, fresh apple, jalapeno, apple liqueur and lemon, $12) than a happy clam. The crowd, a mix of yuppies and 50-somethings who think they’re still hip also leaves something to be desired—if you’re looking to pick up, journey elsewhere. In fact, when we heard a group of adjacent single ladies mutter, “Wanna go to Turtle Bay instead?,” for once, we didn’t blame ‘em. And if you’re coupled up, you’re probably best skipping dinner and drinks here too…after dealing with unbearably slow service, odds are, you’ll both be ready to call it a night.
