The Sunburnt Calf BK: The ever-growing Moo Group has begat yet another baby calf, this one an Austral-Asian beaut residing on Prospect Heights’s well-worn Vanderbilt Avenue drag. Like her older Manhattan bros (The Sunburnt Cow, The Sunburnt Calf and Bondi Road), The Sunburnt Calf BK offers a rough-hewn girl-next-door appeal, complete with dark, distressed wood furnishings, a long, approachable bar, a sweet back patio (perfect Endless Brunch, $20-$25) and the ubiquitous Moo Group welcome shot. But Sunburnt Calf BK has something a bit different to offer, too, including a unique menu of “flavors from the Sth-East Asian region served Australian style.” The small-plate offerings ($8) include a refreshing long bean salad dressed with watercress, coconut and peanuts, but “big plates” ($14) offer a heftier meal—try the turmeric beer-battered Barramundi (a fish native to the South Seas) or the perfectly tender avocado and watercress-adorned shaking beef. With a drink program from Summit Bar great Greg Seider, offerings like the Thai Basil Lemonade and the Zu Moscow Mule (with just the right touch of sweet lychee) are exactly as amazing as they sound. All this, combined with the unflappable friendliness of the wholly Australian staff, assures that the Moo Group’s signature Austra-hattan revelry has come to BK to stay.
