The Top of the Strand: Pretty much every new roof deck bills itself as “a world away,” but this is particularly true in the case of the Strand Hotel’s new outdoor space, considering that the streets below are filled with jewelry parts vendors and wholesale hat hawkers. The seductive interior of the 21st floor lounge was conceived by Sex and the City set designer Lydia Marks, so expect to see plenty of Manolos trotting the turf. Equipped with a retractable glass roof and walls, the intimate space is ideal for viewing the Empire State Building, which happens to be right in your face. Cocktails ($14-$15) are divided into four categories: classic, vanguard, modern and exotic, with selections ranging from a Side Car (Hennessy Black, Cointreau, Lemon), to the signature Top of the Strand Martini (Creme de Violette, VeeV Acai, Maraschino liqueur). Wooden banquettes doubling as planters line the deck, and are strewn with oversized pillows primed for a very Samantha-on-the-loose encounter. Yes, Ms. Marks knew what she was doing when she decided to go for that 'hothouse' atmosphere. |
