How many chic restaurant-and-bar virtuosos does it take to launch a lounge in the MPD that isn’t hated for being in the MPD? Around eight, who have practiced at Mulberry Project, Milk and Honey, Bagatelle and Death & Co.—to name a few. Attempting to embrace the er, charming, features of former resident Florent, the men behind Minatta meticulously re-designed and recycled the tucked-away interior. Small “American” tapas plates ($6-18) are paired with the creators’ “bespoke” cocktail concoctions, where the drinker custom designs their $14 drink. Cozy as a croque-monsieur, The Minatta Project hosts a large communal table surrounded by dark leather banquettes in the back. In the front, a zinc bar sits opposite the Enomatic wine dispenser: a DIY vending machine for bad late-night decisions. As always, the MPD manages to keep locals coming with irresistible gimmicks—this time by suggesting, “let them drink wine!”
