The Way Station: It's mid-way between Prospect Park and Crown Heights, and, like neighborhood hit Franklin Park, The Way Station is attracting a crowd that’s mid-way through gentrification. From hipster to hip-hop—and not much in between—the years-in-the-making Wash Ave bar is drawing a uniquely Brooklyn crowd with local musicians and an everything-goes vibe. The style, like the clientele, is a bit of a mash-up—while the bar claims to be “steampunk”-themed, the red vinyl booths (inherited from shuttered neighbor Barrette), industrial fixtures and a restroom housed in a throwback cop-in-a-box are a start, but not quite cohesive enough to make much sense. The cocktails, on the other hand, are simple but more thoughtful—try the Trainwreck (gin, muddled cucumber and grapefruit juice, $10), which is much more charming than its name. Just be careful how many you throw back…this station could easily find you steaming toward your own train wreck.
