This East Village pub sets itself apart with a fleet of exceptionally friendly bartenders, who aren’t just angling for big tips. Arrive early because there are no tables; seating is only at the polished copper bar or along the walls. The kitschy academic theme manages to be charming instead of giving you flashbacks to all-nighters in the libes. Still as poor as you were on student loans? Bring your favorite book to the 5pm-8pm weekday happy hour and gorge yourself on the free buffet. It’s the smart thing to do.
