Thymari: Finding a Greek restaurant in Astoria is like searching for hay...in a haystack. Luckily, Thymari is able to differentiate itself from the others by spanning the spectrum of Greek cooking in a new and original way. The menu features inspired dishes from all of Greece's regions—both famous and less-so—such as brown lentil fakes soup ($7), pork tenderloin hirino ($17) and lamb arni fileto ($19). There is, of course, the usual suspects like pita, feta, plenty of traditional spreads...not to mention, fresh-made baklava ($7) for dessert. The décor is clearly Greek, without being cliched (say, murals of the Acropolis and Parthenon), while the wine list is an impressive array of Grecian wine, both red and white, from regions such as Macedonia, Corinth and Santorini (bottles from $26). Okay so maybe Astoria doesnt need more Greek restaurants, but when they're this authentic, and good, who's to complain?
