Tip Top Bar & Grill: "If Cheers was in Bed-Stuy, Tip Top Bar and Grill would be it." But don't expect Kirstie Alley to come waltzing down the stairs (and lately, thank God). Instead, this former speakeasy-turned-legal operation is frequented by neighborhood regulars with no-nonsense bartenders. When you do enter, a sign of "ABSOLUTELY NO DRUGS" greets you at the front door, so it's cigs only in the covered patio/Christmas light/green awning/junk-filled back room. In the front, patrons are ready to spill their stories about the neighborhood, reminiscing about the days when Bed-Stuy was their playground and the women were "fine." Drinks are cheap (mostly $5 and under), so you'll have plenty of bills left over to slip into the jukebox that frequently belts '70s soul. And if the kitchen happens to be open (sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't), try the fried catfish or jerk chicken (both $5 a plate!). Tip Top is THE diviest of dives; it's the kind of place where you ask, "Where's your grill?" and people just smile. But rest assured, come back a second time and they WILL know your name. |
