Tolani: The name Tolani is South African (slang for “too good”), but grab your culinary passport, because the dishes at this Upper West Side “wine restaurant” are global in nature. From Brazilian-style Grilled Sirloin Steak ($27) to Malaysian Goat Curry ($18) to Basque-style Pan Seared Cod ($18), the menu selections, like the wine options, are varied and many. Both the lantern-lit street level lounge and downstairs restaurant (complete with a view of the wine cellar and outdoor patio) are packed with an older crowd (think: senior partner rather than intern) sipping Crantinis (cranberries, vodka, sweet vermouth and triple sec, $12) and nursing a Rosemary’s Baby (rosemary, lemon, citrus vodka and Hefenweiser, $12). You may have to strain to be heard over your neighbors, but the note on the menu regarding the $30 credit card minimum is loud and clear. Tolani may be too good, but it ain’t too cheap. |
