Toloache 82: An uptown branch of Chef Julian Medina’s beloved Theater District joint, Toloache 82 is a taqueria-ish bistro (or perhaps a bistro-ish taqueria?) with plenty of fruity drinks...and even more fruity guacamoles. Toloache’s most outstanding dish is their Guacamole Frutas, medium-spiced guac made with oddball options like pomegranates, mangoes and peaches alongside the standard avocados. Of course, any respectable Mexican spot is gonna pair fruit with tequila and Toloache does that in abundance, with a massive list of intriguing margaritas ($10-18). Other tipples include mezcals ($12-13), cocktails like sangria, and run-of-the-mill cervezas like Corona and Pacifico ($6). If you need a little something more substantial than dips and booze, the entrees are exotic and delicious, like the veal head and chorizo tacos ($13), tacos de chapulines (that’s grasshopper, folks!) and the shredded suckling pig ($26). The interior is surprisingly classy, too, with a tiled ceviche bar and rich leather booths. Who knew fruits could be so fun?
