Valbella Midtown: Midtown bars usually make themselves known with flashy, neon signs or otherwise obvious accoutrements…but Valbella plays hard to get, tucked a ways back from the street. Once inside, things remain a bit enigmatic, although the trendy blacklight under the bar acts like a guiding light for middle-aged suits to get their sip on. The corporate patrons don’t quite fit the art-deco design, but aren’t all after-work spots in Midtown as incongruous? You’ll be welcomed pretty warmly and, considering how much you’ll be spending, a kind word is nice consolation. A Caesar salad ($15) is nearly as costly as a rum and coke, but this place earns cool points for using only top-shelf liquor. To add to its mystery, an official drink menu is still to come, but you can enjoy most tap beers for merely $6 and the walls are lined with bottles of wine itching to be opened. For eats, a plate of penne with homemade vodka sauce is $29...and one of the more reasonably priced plates on the menu. If you’re a fella after your ever-elusive Ms. Perfect, Valbella's mostly male clientele keeps that mysterious, too. But if you’re seeking all-right after-work drinks and bites in Midtown with an Old Boys setting and you've got bucks to spend, loosen up that tie and grab a tipple!
