Vandaag: It's not likely that the sentence "You feel like Scandanavian tonight?" often escapes your lips, but this new East village eatery may be worth a try when the thought of yet another enchilada gives you heartburn. Vandaag has all the right Northern European elements— sparse furnishings, orange-wire light fixtures, grilled quail, a tall blonde for every five square feet, and even an entire set of refreshing beer cocktails (try the Radler, with pineapple infused akvavit, lime, ginger syrup and Belgian witbier, $10). The décor is midcentury modern with touches of classic Americana, while bartenders are "decked out" in Levis and striped button-downs. While the cool metal bar is fine for sipping on their house-infused akavit ($12), it's tempting to take your drink downstairs, where a PS1-style video installation outside of the ladies' has the most character in the place. Didn't come to dinner for a modern art exhibit? The minimalist, yet quirky dining room and emo vibe is a pleasant enough backdrop for discussing socialized medicine and paternity leave over a “Hen for Two” ($45). |
