There’s nothing more boring than complaints about the “gentrification” of the LES, and when Meow Mix closed, the cattiness began. After painting “We’ll-never-leave” slogans on the abandoned bar’s exterior, the largely lesbian locals left, and a more hetero crowd moved into the thoughtfully divey Vasmay Lounge. Thankfully, a very attractive staff still provides plenty of eye candy for boys and girls alike, regardless of their “preferences.” Vasmay’s exterior is a strange shade of red that probably hasn’t yet been named, and inside, a dark room with a new pool table and punk-rock jukebox hosts an old and young mix of LES barflies who won’t go near Ludlow Street. The live music area downstairs is being remodeled, but the bands will be back soon and there will be no cover. Welcome to the neighborhood, Vasmay Lounge.
A wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I just popped in for a drink with pals, but with such a friendly and low key vibe, we found it hard to leave. If fact, we didnt. They had to turn off the lights. Ill be back for the racks, both on and off the pooltable.
