Velour: Once Brite Bar, the lounge currently occupying the corner of 27th and 10th has become a haven for those who want all the glitz of the Meatpacking without the door drama of nearby Avenue and Marquee. The name change should indicate a shift in ambiance, as this latest incarnation is a rich combination of leather banquettes, dark lacquered cocktail tables, red lighting, and yes, velour drapes, velour backrests and...thankfully they don't take the name further than that. Even old Brite Bar's signature drink underwent a renovation for this venue—it's still a mix of Zygo vodka, Southern Comfort, fresh lime and white cranberry juice, but gone is the triple sec, and more importantly, the cheesy "Fother Mucker" name. You can now order the "Velour" ($12), unless beer ($5-$7) or wine ($7) is more your style. Bottle service is available too, as are basic bites (served all night!) like pizza and onion rings. So mingle with the 20-somethings by the bar, or dance to the DJ's loud beats in the VIP section—it's just beyond the velour ropes. |
