Veselka Bowery:
The East Village has made room for a new kind of diner: one that eschews a jukebox and vinyl seats in favor of chandeliers and Salmon Croquettes ($16). Veselka Bowery may be open 24/7 and serve breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner, but that’s about where the comparisons with its ‘50s-era hotspot predecessor stop. Prepare to be wowed by expertly mixed cocktails like the Black Night (Charbay Vodka, Pierre Ferrand Cognac, black tea, Orgeat and fresh lemon juice, $11) while you dive into your choice of seasonal Ukranian dishes like a sizeable helping of Pork Meatballs served over homemade egg noodles and mushroom sauce ($16). And though the food is top-notch Eastern European, it’s the 75+ selections of vodka that will remind you of “ze old country.” So stop by to get your borscht on any time you like–it’s what your Bubby would’ve wanted.
