Wall & Water: Step on the sprawling white stairway and it's easy to think you're Cher doing her Bob Mackie schtick on Oscar Night. We can't vouch for any celeb appearances here, though...unless you're talking tycoons of "the street." But on the inside, David Rockwell's latest design-triumph slash eatery feels more like a place to hide from the paparazzi rather than a spot to egg 'em on. The mod art deco theme, with vaulted ceilings lined in silvery filigree, feels a lot like a spa (minus the low-cal menu). A friendly sous chef will meet you at the top of the stairs, where you may purview the day's appetizer selection before opting for cocktail lounging (on the right), or serious dining (on the left). While much of the menu is still a work in progress, some of these starters, like duck prosciutto, foie-gras terrine and Hudson Valley farm cheeses, are already getting fan mail. In fact, everything here is locally sourced, straight from the bounty of upper New York State. Nice touch, but we say any place that knows to pour a good vintage from Chateau Teyssier has something on that's on the money...after all, those financiers know their Bordeaux futures backward and forward. Invest in serious tycoon watching and pleasurable sipping, but try not to palpitate over the Dow at the same time! |
