Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport: Promising "sun, sand and fun", South Street Seaport’s Water Taxi Beach delivers on the first two fronts (weather permitting), though the third is pretty subjective. During the day the space is packed, but instead of dodging an awkward encounter with your cousin's friend of a friend, you'll be diving out of the line of fire as beach-goers' tots squirt each other with water guns. What could be an ideal day-drinking spot complete with picnic benches and a picturesque view, winds up feeling like a birth control commercial—DJs blasting house music compete with screaming toddlers, though the dance floor remains empty, the ping pong tables collecting dust. Plastic palm trees all but sway in the seaport breeze and the entire aesthetic feels awkward and gimmicky. The menu is legit, offering up fish tacos and roasted corn for an average of $5, a raw bar featuring .80 cent oysters, clams and shrimp during Happy Hour and of course, a full bar. Past sunset, the crowd must present ID, so while playdate-palooza may come to a close, considering the typical Seaport crowd, most of the IDs presented will be passports. |
