Waterfront Ale House
Who knew ale could be so stale? Set far off the riverside in a tired corner of Murray Hill, the Waterfront Ale House is about as blah as it gets. Don’t be fooled by the name—waterfront views don’t abide here, unless you count the plate-glass windows facing a Kips Bay shopping plaza. And the misnomers don’t stop there; sadly, this sleepy bar shares none of the charm of its sister institution in Brooklyn. No live jazz. No snazzy BBQ. No young Brooklynites. Just an ESPN-centric TV, some bland pub grub, and an ever-present crew of old booze hounds staring blankly into their pints. Yeah, there’s a lot of ale, and it’s reasonably priced during happy hour (Mon-Fri, 4pm-7pm). At least the bar kept up that part of the bargain, because on all other counts, it’s a deal-breaker.

Yeah, we get it, the reviewer hates Murray Hill (it's actually Kips Bay, but whatever). So do I. That's why the W-front Manhattan is great. The food is excellent (it's the same menu as in Brooklyn, with the same game-centric specials, from the main guy chef), as is the beer selection. The Brooklyn branch is bigger and has live music,it's also darker, musty and stale and features that middle-aged jerk of a manager who occasionally comes to manhattan.

I also disagree with the reviewer. The food is great and it's usually a pretty decent crowd.

I humbly disagree with the Sheckys reviewer. My wife and I have been going to Waterfront for casual dinner at the bar for years. While the music isn't live, it's usally funky jazzy. The crowd is our age 30's - 40's and there are usually some creative specials on the menu. The booze-hounds usally clear out by 6 or 7. They have two 19" TV's, hardly a sports bar.
