Xie Xie: Pronounced “shay shay” and meaning “thank you” in Mandarin, Xie Xie claims to be an “energetic, fast-casual” Asian sandwich shop. The Mandarin word for “let-down” would be handy, though, because—inspired décor aside—it’s hard to shake the feeling that you're dining in a trendy, Asian McDonald’s. Indeed, the space itself is modern and very vibrant, with rich purple ceilings and round white tables, but the menu is limited, featuring an array of sandwiches that —like apartments in the neighborhood—are both undersized and overpriced ($8.50–$14.00). To be fair, the establishment offers a zippy little soda / sake concoction guaranteed to help you forget that your diminutive meal set you back $20 (or more if you opt for the $14 juice-box wine). Additionally, desserts such as the “1000-year old ice cream sandwich” ($4) are sublime, if the only option for vegetarian diners. But when it comes to paying ten bucks for something the size of a Whopper Jr., you may want to say “no xie xie.” |
